Corruption Allegations Against Bangladesh ICT's Chief Prosecutor
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Feb 24 (NationPress) A prosecutor from Bangladesh's International Crime Tribunal (ICT) has leveled serious allegations against the departing Chief Prosecutor, Mohammad Tajul Islam, citing corruption and irregularities. He claims that a network led by Tajul has transformed the "Chair of the Chief Prosecutor" into a profitable venture.
In a social media announcement on Monday, Prosecutor BM Sultan Mahmud accused Tajul and fellow prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim of various irregularities, including suspicious financial transactions and questionable management of significant cases.
As per Sultan's post, towards the end of November last year, the spouse of Abzal—who is implicated in the Ashulia case concerning the murder and incineration of six bodies during the July 2024 protests—was seen entering Tamim's office with a heavy bag one evening.
"Upon noticing this, we rushed to inform Tajul Islam in his office, but instead of taking action, we were reprimanded," Sultan recounted.
He further asserted that Tamim later admitted, in front of witnesses, that Abzal's wife had visited him.
"The Chief Prosecutor merely inquired about the reason for the accused's wife being in his office, and that was the end of it," he stated, as reported by The Daily Star.
Sultan alleged that Abzal was eventually made a state witness before being acquitted in the final ruling.
Concerns were also raised regarding the Chankharpul case, where law enforcement reportedly opened fire on demonstrators, resulting in at least six fatalities during protests in July.
Sultan claimed that despite a video showing Sub-Inspector Ashraful instructing others to fire, he was treated as a witness rather than facing charges.
"I possess that video. It is available for anyone to view if necessary," he added.
He questioned why Assistant Police Commissioner Al Imran Hossain was allegedly removed from the Abu Sayed murder case in Rangpur during the July protests, despite multiple witnesses implicating him.
Sultan also alleged that former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was unjustly turned into a state witness.
"Not just IGP Mamun, but in the Ashulia case, Abzal was also transitioned to a state witness for financial gain. A syndicate comprising three or four individuals has been orchestrating this from the start," he charged.
In response to the allegations, Tajul addressed a press conference on Monday, stating, "These are personal accusations, and I am not aware of such matters. We have probed these claims, and they are entirely unfounded. It's regrettable if anyone circulates such tales out of personal spite."
On Monday, Md Aminul Islam officially took over as Chief Prosecutor of the ICT, succeeding outgoing Chief Prosecutor Tajul at the tribunal's premises.
Following the transition of power from the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in 2024, Tajul was appointed Chief Prosecutor of the ICT by the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
His tenure has drawn international attention due to claims of procedural irregularities and controversial decisions in several cases.
