Czech University Campus Shooting Report Not Verified: Interior Minister

Prague, Dec 5 (NationPress) A reported shooting incident at the University of West Bohemia in the western Czech city of Pilsen has not been confirmed, according to Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan.

"Fortunately, the alleged attack on the University of West Bohemia campus was not confirmed," Rakusan stated on Wednesday via the social media platform X.

Czech police were alerted to a report of gunfire on university grounds at approximately 5 p.m., leading to the rapid deployment of extensive resources, including a rapid response team and a helicopter. Around 1,000 individuals were evacuated from the campus as a precautionary measure, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

"The security measures have now concluded, and as previously stated, no one was injured," police confirmed in a follow-up post on X.

The Czech News Agency revealed that the situation began when a student contacted emergency services shortly after 4 p.m., alleging to have heard a gunshot or a similar sound near the Faculty of Economics. However, the university later clarified that none of the eight gunshot detectors located in the area captured any gunfire.

"We are keeping students and staff informed through bulk emails and social media updates," stated the university on X.

This incident follows nearly a year after a tragic shooting at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague, where a student opened fire, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals and injuries to 25 others.
