Washington, Jan 21 (NationPress) US Senator Steve Daines visited India earlier this month to advocate for improved market access for Montana’s pulse crops and to emphasize the strategic alliance between Washington and New Delhi, according to his office.

Daines, who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was in India from January 17 to 19. During his stay, he engaged with high-ranking government officials, parliament members, and business leaders in New Delhi.

His discussions included meetings with External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, as stated in the report.

“I came to India to reaffirm our two countries’ shared values and strategic partnership and to advocate on behalf of Montana’s pulse crop farmers,” Daines remarked. “I am grateful to Minister Goyal for addressing our farmers’ concerns and will continue collaborating with President Trump to prioritize this significant issue.”

The visit mainly focused on trade, defense collaboration, and supply chain security. Daines highlighted the strengthening of US-India defense ties and the partnership's role in ensuring a stable and open Indo-Pacific region, as noted in a media release.

His office indicated that trade was a pivotal topic in the discussions. Daines urged Indian officials to endorse favorable terms for US pulse crops in any forthcoming trade agreements between the two nations.

Montana stands as the leading producer of pulse crops in the United States, while India is recognized as the largest global consumer of crops such as lentils, peas, and chickpeas.

Daines also advocated for expedited progress in ongoing trade negotiations between Washington and New Delhi. The report mentioned his push for a fair and reciprocal bilateral trade deal.

During his visit, the senator aimed to advance the interests of both the Trump administration and the people of Montana.

In a related statement, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor remarked that the trip underscored the necessity of consistent high-level engagement with India.

“As we strive to elevate the partnership between our nations, I will ensure that senior officials frequently visit India,” Gor stated. He emphasized that Daines’ engagements were pivotal in enhancing the bilateral relationship.

The discussions also encompassed initiatives to secure supply chains and bolster cooperation in key sectors between both countries.

Last week, Daines reached out to President Trump, emphasizing the importance of favorable treatment for pulse crops in future trade agreements, as per the statement.

This visit occurs as the United States and India continue to strengthen their relationships in defense, technology, and trade, even while addressing differences regarding market access and tariffs.

Agriculture has historically been a sensitive topic in US-India trade discussions, with both parties seeking improved access while safeguarding domestic producers.
