Death Toll Surpasses 100 in Sectarian Violence in Pakistan

Islamabad, Nov 28 (NationPress) The death toll from sectarian violence in Kurram district, located in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has now exceeded 100, according to information provided by the hospital administration to the media on Thursday.
The violent incidents began on Thursday when a convoy of passenger coaches transporting Shiite Muslims was ambushed in the Parachinar region, resulting in significant casualties, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
This attack ignited a series of sectarian clashes between the Shiite and Sunni communities, leading to multiple retaliatory attacks in the subsequent days, which raised the death toll to 88 by Monday.
A delegation from the provincial government visited the area following the attack on the coaches and a ceasefire was established between the two sects. Nonetheless, sporadic violence persisted during the ceasefire, pushing the death toll to over 100.
The district's deputy commissioner, Javedullah Mehsud, informed the media that after the government delegation's failure to maintain a ceasefire, tribal elders from adjacent districts are set to visit Kurram on Thursday to convene a 'Jirga', or tribal court.
These elders will endeavor to persuade both factions to engage in new mediation efforts aimed at halting the hostilities, as stated by the deputy commissioner.
