Dhaka, Aug 6 (NationPress) In the last 24 hours, three additional individuals have succumbed to dengue fever in Bangladesh, leading to a total of 92 fatalities from this mosquito-transmitted illness in 2025.

The deaths were reported from the Chattogram and Rajshahi divisions as well as the Dhaka North City Corporation, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Over this timeframe, 428 new patients were admitted to hospitals with viral fever, pushing the confirmed dengue cases to 22,812 in 2025, as reported by the United News of Bangladesh.

As per the DGHS, new dengue cases emerged in various divisions: Barishal (104), Dhaka (74), Dhaka South City Corporation (62), Dhaka North City Corporation (51), Rajshahi (50), Chattogram (39), Khulna (30), Mymensingh (14), and Rangpur (4).

Currently, there are 1,259 patients receiving treatment across different healthcare facilities in Bangladesh. In 2024, 575 lives were lost to dengue in the country.

Last month, health officials in Bangladesh implemented new guidelines for all hospitals, which included setting up fever/flu corners in outpatient departments and reserving dedicated beds for dengue patients. The DGHS also issued specific instructions for treating individuals infected with Covid-19, as cases had surged in June but were now declining, according to Bangladesh's 'The Daily Star' last month.

The new guidelines were necessary as Bangladesh experienced an outbreak of three diseases—Covid-19, dengue, and chikungunya in June. Health professionals cautioned that these illnesses could overburden the healthcare system until prompt and coordinated actions were taken. Abu Hussain Md Moinul Ahsan, Director (Hospital) of DGHS, noted on July 16 that while Covid-19 cases are decreasing, dengue cases are on the rise.

The DGHS disseminated 16 directives to all public and private hospitals. These directives require that hospitals create flu/fever corners at their outpatient departments. Confirmed dengue cases should be categorized into groups A, B, and C based on severity, with treatment adhering to national guidelines.

Government hospitals have been instructed to maintain laboratory facilities for dengue testing and to stock sufficient dengue diagnostic kits. Depending on the severity of the illness, dengue patients should be admitted or referred to higher-level facilities as needed. The directive mandates that all hospitals have a trained medical team dedicated to treating dengue patients.

Hospitals must ensure the availability of necessary intravenous (IV) fluids for treating dengue and arrange for procurement as needed. Additionally, patient fluid intake and output must be regularly monitored. Hospitals are also required to provide adequate mosquito nets for dengue patients.

Point of View

I recognize the dire situation that Bangladesh faces with the rising dengue cases and the corresponding fatalities. It is crucial that both the public and private healthcare sectors collaborate to manage this outbreak effectively. The health authorities must act decisively to protect the population, emphasizing the need for public awareness and preventive measures. We stand firm in our commitment to keeping the nation informed and safe during this challenging time.
