UN Chief Signals Risk of Escalated Conflict Amid Middle East Tensions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New York, March 1 (NationPress) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned about "a potential broader conflict with serious implications for civilians and regional stability" during a Security Council meeting. The session saw the US and Israel on one side and Iran and Russia on the other exchanging accusations over the recent escalation in the Middle East.
“Military operations risk triggering a series of uncontrolled events in the world's most volatile region,” Guterres remarked during an emergency gathering of the Council, which followed the US-Israeli strike on Iran and its extensive retaliation throughout the Gulf area.
He lamented that the diplomatic opportunity that arose from the recent discussions in Geneva involving the US, Iran, and Oman as a mediator has been wasted. A technical meeting addressing nuclear issues is set for next week in Vienna.
Condemning the assaults from both factions, he urged for an immediate ceasefire. The US Permanent Representative Mike Waltz emphasized that “historical clarity is needed at this moment,” asserting that the US would take measures to ensure that “the Iranian regime can never pose a nuclear threat to the world.”
“This is a matter of global security,” he stated.
The US aims to dismantle Iran's missile capabilities that threaten neighboring countries. Waltz accused Iran of ongoing "aggression and violence" that must not be overlooked.
In response, Iran's Permanent Representative Amir Saeid Iravani accused the US and Israel of committing war crimes by targeting civilian locations. He rejected claims about an imminent threat, asserting that such allegations regarding Iran's nuclear program are baseless.
Meanwhile, Russia's Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia condemned the US-Israel attacks as “another unwarranted act of military aggression against a sovereign UN Member State.” He warned that these actions jeopardize regional stability and referenced remarks made by US Vice President JD Vance regarding the Iraq War.
In 2023, Vance had said that the Iraq campaign was “unforced,” leading to unnecessary casualties among innocent Iraqis and Americans, and noted that Washington should have learned from this experience, which Nebenzia argues has not occurred.
Israel's Permanent Representative Danny Danon highlighted the frequent chants in Iran calling for violence against the US and Israel, stating, “We are curbing extremism before it spirals out of control.”
With the Council divided and inactive, no action was anticipated.
