Brussels, Aug 12 (NationPress) In a significant show of unity, 26 leaders of the European Union released a collective statement on Monday, reaffirming their commitment to support Ukraine ahead of the highly anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin scheduled for August 15 in Alaska. Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, however, opted out of endorsing the statement, citing concerns regarding its implications.
The statement, crafted under the guidance of EU Council President Antonio Costa, emphasized that a “just and lasting peace” must respect Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, stressing that borders should “not be changed by force.”
“The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine,” the leaders asserted, adding that meaningful discussions can only occur in the context of a ceasefire or reduced hostilities.
The EU leaders applauded Trump's endeavors to “end Russia’s war of aggression” against Ukraine and establish a just and lasting peace and security for the nation. They underscored the need for a peace that honors international law and emphasizes Ukraine's territorial integrity.
Recently, the European Union has advocated for the inclusion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the discussions, as reported by Euro News. They stressed that any diplomatic resolution must safeguard the security interests of both Europe and Ukraine.
In their statement, the EU leaders indicated their readiness to offer additional political, financial, and military support to Ukraine for its self-defense while demanding security assurances for the war-affected nation. They also expressed backing for Ukraine's ambition to join the EU.
In contrast, Hungary declared that it “does not associate itself” with the statement.
“With just four days remaining until the historic summit between President Trump and President Putin, the European Council attempted to release a statement on behalf of all EU heads of state and government. Before the liberal mainstream begins their usual ‘Putin’s puppet’ narrative, I want to clarify why I could NOT endorse the statement for Hungary,” Orban expressed on X.
Orban further elaborated: “The statement seeks to impose conditions for a meeting to which EU leaders were not invited. It’s regrettable that the EU has been sidelined. The most reasonable action for EU leaders is to propose an EU-Russia summit, mirroring the US-Russia meeting. Let’s give peace a chance!”
On Monday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto reiterated Hungary's position that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine should be resolved via diplomacy rather than military means, as reported by Xinhua News Agency. In a Facebook statement, he emphasized that Hungary has continually advocated for a ceasefire and diplomatic dialogue.
Szijjarto noted that Hungary views the Trump-Putin summit as a potential opportunity for peace. He mentioned that he had discussed the upcoming meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov over the phone.
