Brussels, July 16 (NationPress) - The European Union (EU) was unable to implement a new set of sanctions against Russia, as Slovakia obstructed the decision due to worries about energy security, stated Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
After a gathering of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Kallas expressed her disappointment, saying she was "truly saddened" by the lack of approval, adding that "the responsibility now lies with Slovakia."
Last month, the European Commission introduced its 18th sanctions package, aimed at targeting Russia's energy sector, banking activities, and defense industry. Among the proposed actions is a prohibition on financial dealings linked to Russia's Nord Stream gas pipelines, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
Slovakia, which is highly dependent on Russian gas, opposed the sanctions due to concerns over potential supply disruptions and increasing energy prices connected to a separate EU initiative to phase out Russian gas imports by early 2028.
Regarding military aid to Ukraine, Kallas expressed a desire for the United States to "share the burden" of weapon supplies.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump supported a proposal for European allies to acquire billions of dollars worth of American military equipment for Ukraine.
"If you commit to providing the weapons but state that someone else will cover the costs, it isn't truly a gift from you," Kallas remarked, referencing Trump's proposal.
