Former Latin American Foreign Ministers Affirm Unyielding Panamanian Sovereignty Over the Panama Canal

Panama City, Jan 7 (NationPress) Former foreign ministers representing multiple Latin American nations have rallied in support of Panamanian sovereignty regarding the Panama Canal, following recent statements by US President-elect Donald Trump that hinted at the potential for the United States to reclaim oversight of the crucial waterway.

In a collective declaration, these esteemed diplomats conveyed their complete endorsement for the people and government of the Republic of Panama, firmly stating that “the sovereignty and independence of Panama over the Interoceanic Canal are not negotiable.”

They emphasized that “it is indisputable that the Republic of Panama and its people have managed the Canal responsibly, ensuring its vital role in international maritime trade and global economic development, which stands as a testament to Latin American autonomy and pride.”

The Torrijos-Carter Treaties, which were signed in 1977 by the United States and Panama, “established a schedule for the transfer of the Canal and its surrounding areas to Panamanian control,” as outlined in the statement.

This significant agreement, reached with the oversight of the international community, was the outcome of the “Panamanian people's long-standing and resolute struggle, buoyed by extensive international support,” the statement highlighted.

Over 20 former foreign ministers from nations such as Panama, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, and Argentina were among the signatories of this declaration, as reported by Xinhua news agency on Wednesday.

“We reiterate our solidarity with Panama and its people, backing their rightful defense of sovereignty over this invaluable strategic asset,” they concluded.

In mid-December, Trump raised the possibility of reclaiming control of the Panama Canal if Panama fails to lower toll fees for US vessels traversing the waterway. In response, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino dismissed Trump’s threat, asserting that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area rightfully belongs to Panama, and will continue to be under Panama’s ownership.”
