Key Takeaways
Tokyo, Dec 15 (NationPress) Law enforcement has taken a 30-year-old man into custody on Monday in connection with a stabbing incident that occurred a day prior in Fukuoka, Japan. This incident resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to a woman and a man employed at an event for the popular Japanese idol group HKT48, according to local news reports.
The accused, Naoya Yamaguchi, who resides in Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, faces charges of attempted murder related to the stabbing of the man. He has confessed to the crime and indicated his involvement in the assault on the woman, as per police reports from Kyodo News.
The stabbings took place on Sunday at the Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka stadium and a nearby amusement venue, Boss E.Zo Fukuoka, where HKT48 hosts performances. HKT48 is recognized as a prominent member of the AKB48 family of all-girl pop groups, based in the Hakata area of Fukuoka.
One of the victims, a 44-year-old event staff member, was attacked in the chest while attempting to intervene with Yamaguchi, who is believed to be the assailant. The second victim, a 27-year-old woman attending a live event at the stadium, suffered an injury to her back.
Police reported receiving a call from Yamaguchi at 2 a.m. on Monday from a pay phone in Kasuga, a city adjacent to Fukuoka. Initially, he claimed to have witnessed the suspect but later acknowledged that he was the one who fled the scene before disconnecting the call. Later that day, Yamaguchi was apprehended while in possession of two knives.
In a separate but related incident earlier in August, a 35-year-old man was arrested in Tokyo concerning the fatal stabbing of a 24-year-old woman outside her residence in Kobe, as reported by Kyodo News.
Identified as Masashi Tanimoto, he is suspected of killing Megumi Katayama inside her building in Kobe. Authorities had placed him on the wanted list while seeking to ascertain his whereabouts.
During police questioning, Tanimoto stated, "I can't say for certain if I intended to kill her, but I did stab her once or twice," which was captured by investigators.
Police identified Tanimoto as a company employee residing in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, and are conducting investigations into any connections between these incidents, as well as potential motives.
