Hamas Announces Resumption of Indirect Negotiations with Israel in Qatar's Capital

Gaza, Jan 4 (NationPress) Hamas has officially stated that indirect discussions with Israel have recommenced in Doha, Qatar, aiming to achieve a complete ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
"The indirect negotiations resume today, in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The movement reaffirms its seriousness and optimism, as it always does, and continues to work toward an agreement that will fulfill the aspirations and goals of our people," Hamas declared in a statement.
The statement further indicated that the current talks are anticipated to emphasize attaining a comprehensive and enduring ceasefire, ensuring the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and facilitating the safe and prompt return of displaced Palestinians to their homes, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
Israel announced on Thursday that it had dispatched a delegation to Doha for the ongoing ceasefire discussions.
Earlier, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that "a delegation of professional officials from the Mossad, Shin Bet, and the IDF (Israel Defense Forces)" will travel to Doha to further the negotiations.
This week, the state-owned Kan TV in Israel reported that Hamas proposed a one-week ceasefire, during which it would ascertain the locations of hostages still held in Gaza and provide a list of those who could be released. Israel has yet to issue an official response to this proposal.
The talks have been mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States and have been ongoing for over a year.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a strong warning, stating that Israel would escalate its military operations in Gaza if Hamas does not agree to a deal for the release of hostages "soon."
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has intensified since October 7, 2023, following an attack by Hamas on southern Israel that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 individuals. In retaliation, Israel launched extensive air and ground assaults on the besieged Gaza Strip, leading to more than 45,500 Palestinian fatalities to date.
