Kathmandu, Oct 29 (NationPress) A helicopter on a mission to retrieve trekkers from the base camp of Mt. Lobuche, a peak adjacent to Mt. Everest, experienced an incident early Wednesday morning, according to a senior police official.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Manojit Kunwar, head of the Solukhumbu District Police, reported that the helicopter, operated by Altitude Air, skidded during its landing at a helipad in Lobuche at 7:50 a.m.
The sole occupant, the pilot, was successfully rescued and transported to Lukla Airport, located near the mountain, he stated.
The helicopter incurred partial damage to its tail and remains at the site of the accident.
Lobuche features two peaks: Lobuche East (6,119 meters) and Lobuche West (6,145 meters), drawing numerous trekkers and climbers annually.
This mountain is often utilized as an acclimatization site for adventurers preparing to ascend higher peaks, including the towering Mt. Everest (8,848.86 meters), the highest mountain in the world.
October marks the peak tourist season in Nepal, with many trekkers traversing the Everest trekking route during this time.
According to DSP Kunwar, as of Tuesday evening, there were 210 trekkers present at the Lobuche base camp.
In recent days, Nepali officials have cautioned trekkers to exercise extreme vigilance due to poor weather conditions stemming from Cyclone Mountha, which formed over the Bay of Bengal.
Snowfall has been affecting Nepal's high, hilly, and mountainous areas, posing dangers to both residents and trekkers. Nevertheless, the weather in the Everest region was reported as clear when the incident occurred, added Kunwar.
Authorities have advised trekkers to remain careful when venturing outside their accommodations in the Everest region.
Meanwhile, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology announced that snowfall and rainfall could affect central and eastern regions from October 30 to November 1.
Multiple government agencies have urged the public to take precautions while traveling in high, hilly, and mountainous areas.
The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has called on all mountaineering and trekking teams, along with domestic and international tourists, to exercise utmost caution in the coming days due to adverse weather.
