India Advocates for a 'Peaceful and Inclusive Political Process Led by Syrians' Following the Collapse of the al-Assad Administration

New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) On Monday, India urged all factions in Syria to focus on the unity and integrity of the nation following the collapse of the al-Assad administration.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement highlighting the necessity for a peaceful resolution amidst the rising chaos in the Middle Eastern nation.
"We are closely monitoring the situation in Syria in light of current developments. We emphasize the importance of all parties striving to maintain the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria," the MEA stated.
It also promoted a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process that respects the interests and aspirations of all segments of Syrian society.
The MEA addressed the safety of Indian nationals in Syria, assuring that the Indian Embassy in Damascus is in constant communication with the community to ensure their safety.
This statement follows significant events over the weekend, as opposition forces captured Damascus after a rapid offensive that resulted in the fall of major Syrian cities within days.
On Sunday, opposition fighters appeared on state television to declare the capture of Damascus and the conclusion of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
Media reports, citing Russian officials, indicate that al-Assad has fled to Moscow with his family, seeking asylum. This development marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s extended civil war.
In Damascus, civilians took to the streets to celebrate, waving the revolution flag, a symbol of Syria prior to the Assad family's dominance. The opposition also freed prisoners from Sednaya Prison near Damascus, which was left by security forces during their retreat.
India had previously issued a travel advisory on Friday, cautioning its citizens against traveling to Syria and urging those stranded in the country to depart at the earliest opportunity.
The ongoing unrest has sparked a grave humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reporting that over 370,000 individuals have been displaced within a week.
As rebels continue to advance and government forces struggle to maintain authority, the security situation raises serious concerns about Syria's future stability.
