India Strongly Denounces the Killings of UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
United Nations, March 31 (NationPress) India expressed its strong condemnation on Monday regarding the tragic deaths of peacekeepers in Lebanon, asserting its commitment to pursuing accountability for this heinous act.
According to Under-Secretary for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, three Indonesian peacekeepers affiliated with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) lost their lives within a span of 24 hours.
In a statement, India’s United Nations Mission declared: “We denounce the recent assaults on United Nations Peacekeepers in UNIFIL, and we extend our respects to the brave Blue Helmets who have fallen.”
The United Nations has withheld the details of the attackers while investigations are ongoing.
Lacroix emphasized that these incidents are completely unacceptable and underlined that peacekeepers should never be targeted.
On Sunday, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also denounced the killings, as reported by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.
UNIFIL operates in regions of Lebanon adjacent to Israel, where both Hezbollah and Israel are active. Its mission includes assisting the Lebanese government in reclaiming control from Hezbollah and serving as a fragile buffer with Israel.
India’s mission highlighted that the country had spearheaded a Security Council resolution in 2021, while it was an elected member, advocating for accountability for those who attack peacekeepers. It asserted that India will persist in its efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Furthermore, it was pointed out that India is one of the largest and longest-serving contributors to United Nations Peacekeeping forces, having tragically lost the most personnel to this noble cause. Historically, India has lost 164 personnel during peace operations, six of whom served with UNIFIL.
At present, 642 Indian personnel are active with UNIFIL, including 540 troops.
Lacroix reported that one Indonesian peacekeeper perished on Sunday due to an explosion within a UNIFIL base.
On Monday, two Indonesian peacekeepers were killed when a blast struck a UNIFIL logistics convoy, obliterating their vehicle, with two others sustaining injuries.
He noted that the source of the explosion remains undetermined.
Dujarric mentioned that in another incident on Saturday, a UNIFIL convoy came under fire, receiving six warning shots from Israel Defence Force personnel stationed nearby, resulting in damage from small arms fire on one of the vehicles.
