Jakarta/Beirut, March 30 (NationPress) - A tragic incident occurred when an Israeli artillery shell struck the headquarters of the Indonesian contingent serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) located in the southern village of Adshit al-Qusayr. One Indonesian peacekeeper lost his life in this attack.
Initial reports from Sunday (local time) indicated that several UNIFIL personnel sustained injuries, with helicopters dispatched to the scene following the shelling, according to Xinhua's coverage of local media reports.
This attack is part of ongoing violent exchanges along the Lebanon-Israel border, amidst escalating tensions in southern Lebanon.
In a statement released on social media, UNIFIL expressed their sorrow, stating, "A peacekeeper was tragically killed last night when a projectile exploded in a UNIFIL position near Adchit Al Qusayr. Another was critically injured. No one should ever lose their life serving the cause of peace."
UNIFIL also called for all involved parties to adhere to international law, ensuring the safety of UN personnel and property, and to avoid actions that could endanger peacekeepers.
It emphasized that "Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are serious violations of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701 and may constitute war crimes... The loss of lives on both sides of the Blue Line is unacceptable. There is no military resolution to this conflict, and violence must cease," the statement concluded.
The Indonesian government confirmed the death of one of its peacekeepers in Adchit Al Qusayr and condemned this violent act, demanding a "thorough and transparent investigation."
In its statement, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry expressed, "The Government of the Republic of Indonesia conveys its deepest condolences for the death of one Indonesian peacekeeper and the injuries sustained by three others serving with UNIFIL."
"This loss deeply saddens us. We extend our highest respect to the fallen peacekeeper for his commitment to international peace and security. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family, and we wish a speedy recovery for the injured personnel. Indonesia is collaborating with UNIFIL to ensure the prompt repatriation of the deceased and to provide the best possible medical care to the injured," the Ministry added.
Furthermore, Indonesia reiterated its condemnation of Israel's actions in southern Lebanon, urging all parties to respect Lebanon's sovereignty, halt attacks on civilian areas, and return to diplomatic discussions to avert further escalation.
