Jakarta, March 31 (NationPress) Indonesia has formally urged the United Nations (UN) to hold an urgent Security Council meeting in the wake of the tragic deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon, as reported by officials.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono reached out to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday via a phone call, emphasizing the necessity for a rapid, transparent, and thorough investigation into the incident, according to the Xinhua news agency.
"We are requesting an immediate Security Council meeting, alongside a swift, detailed, and transparent inquiry process," Sugiono stated in a message shared on his social media platform.
In addition, Sugiono communicated with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji, expressing Indonesia's profound concern regarding the attacks. Both officials agreed to collaborate closely in addressing the situation while supporting initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and maintaining regional stability.
Indonesia has strongly condemned the violent attacks, reiterating that UN peacekeepers must be safeguarded under international law.
On Monday evening, two additional Indonesian personnel serving in the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon were confirmed dead, raising the total fatalities among Indonesian peacekeepers in the area to three, as reported by Indonesian authorities on Tuesday.
The soldiers were part of the Indonesian contingent affiliated with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
"The incident resulted in the deaths of two military personnel, with two others sustaining serious injuries. The injured soldiers are currently receiving medical care at a facility in Beirut," said Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, head of the Ministry of Defence's Information Bureau in Jakarta.
The UNIFIL confirmed the deaths of the two soldiers in an official statement on X, indicating that they were tragically killed in southern Lebanon due to an explosion of unknown origin that destroyed their vehicle.
"This marks the second fatal incident within 24 hours. We emphasize that no individual should lose their life while serving the cause of peace," the statement read.
This additional loss of life followed an earlier attack in southern Lebanon, where Indonesian peacekeepers found themselves caught in the ongoing conflict in the region. Earlier on Sunday, one Indonesian soldier was reported killed, and several others were injured during a strike near a UNIFIL position.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the incident on Monday, urging all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law and ensure the safety and protection of UN personnel and property at all times.
