Yangon, April 5 (NationPress) Continuing its humanitarian support to the earthquake-stricken Myanmar, India on Saturday dispatched an extra 442 tonnes of food aid as part of the ongoing 'Operation Brahma'.
The shipment, carried by the Indian Navy Ship Gharial, reached Thilawa port in Myanmar and was officially handed over by the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, to Yangon Chief Minister U Soe Thein and his team.
"Addressing the needs of the affected population. A substantial 442 tonne food aid shipment (including rice, cooking oil, noodles & biscuits) transported by the Indian Navy landing ship INS Gharial arrived today at Thilawa Port and was presented by Ambassador Abhay Thakur to CM Yangon U Soe Thein and his team," posted the Embassy of India in Yangon on X.
India initiated Operation Brahma to offer essential support, including Search and Rescue (SAR), humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and medical aid, in the wake of the severe 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.
Acting as the 'First Responder' during crises in its vicinity, India had dispatched six aircraft and five naval vessels to deliver 625 MT of Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) material by April 1.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council and Prime Minister of Myanmar, during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, to discuss the situation following the catastrophic earthquake, including India's current efforts under 'Operation Brahma' to provide humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and medical support to Myanmar.
The Senior General expressed appreciation for India's assistance initiatives. The Prime Minister reiterated that, as the First Responder, India stands alongside Myanmar during this crisis and is prepared to send additional material support and resources if necessary.
PM Modi also emphasized the significance of promptly restoring a democratic process through inclusive and credible elections, affirming India's support for initiatives aimed at fostering trust and facilitating a Myanmar-owned and led transition towards a peaceful, stable, and democratic future.
The two leaders also discussed the ongoing infrastructure development projects supported by India in Myanmar. The Prime Minister underscored India's readiness to assist the developmental needs of all communities in Myanmar.
