IANS: What are your thoughts on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership?

Freddy Svane: Although I am now a private citizen, I previously served as Denmark's Ambassador to India. Before my departure, I had a private meeting with Prime Minister Modi. I have always been a believer in India. There are certainly challenges, but robust political leadership is crucial. India enjoys substantial benefits from strong leadership, which is vital in addressing geopolitical challenges, including tariffs and other global matters.

IANS: What is your take on the tariffs imposed by the US on India?

Freddy Svane: I am speaking as a former diplomat, having collaborated closely with both the US and the EU. The issue of tariffs is multifaceted. The US has utilized tariffs as a means to influence global systems. Whether this approach will prove successful is open to debate. However, it undoubtedly serves as a wake-up call for numerous countries, including India. I am confident that India has its own strategy to respond effectively.

It is crucial for nations like India to remain vigilant and protect their economic and security interests in light of such policy shifts, he emphasized.

IANS: How do you perceive the new tariffs the US has imposed on China? Will this impact global trade?

Freddy Svane: Global trade and economic policies should not merely serve the interests of dominant nations. Such a stance will not foster shared economic advancement. Tariffs may not always be the optimal solution, yet frequent announcements from Washington contribute to uncertainty in the global trade landscape.

IANS: What is your evaluation of the Indian economy?

Freddy Svane: I have been closely monitoring India for the past six months. I view India as a resilient nation with immense potential. I wholeheartedly support 'Viksit Bharat'. India has a clear mission, but to realize it, a well-defined agenda, effective planning, and focused execution are essential.

With its youthful population, India has remarkable opportunities. It is vital to create jobs and harness the energy of the youth to fuel economic growth, he added.

IANS: How do you assess India’s trade policies and investment environment?

Freddy Svane: India has a unique chance to attract both domestic and foreign investors. I have observed diplomats working diligently to promote green initiatives. There is significant potential in expanding the energy sector, advancing green technologies, and implementing sustainable solutions in line with global standards. No other nation is progressing as swiftly in this arena as India.

IANS: What are your views on initiatives like 'Digital India' and 'Make in India'?

Freddy Svane: As an Ambassador, I witnessed India’s digital transformation firsthand. I was particularly struck by the widespread adoption of QR codes, which are both innovative and effective. These initiatives—Digital India and Make in India—are significantly reshaping the country’s economic and administrative landscape.
