Phnom Penh/New Delhi, July 26 (NationPress) India confirmed on Saturday that it is continuously observing the circumstances along the border of Cambodia and Thailand, particularly due to the recent violent conflicts in the area.
“We are diligently tracking the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border. India maintains strong and amicable relations with both nations and anticipates that both parties will implement measures to halt hostilities and avert further escalation,” remarked Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Indian citizens in the vicinity were advised to reach out to their respective Indian Embassies in either country for assistance.
Earlier today, the Indian Embassy in Cambodia recommended that Indian nationals refrain from traveling to the border regions due to the ongoing unrest. They also urged citizens to contact the Embassy in case of emergencies.
In a statement posted on X, the Indian Embassy in Cambodia asserted, “Given the ongoing confrontations at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are urged to avoid border travel. In emergencies, please approach the Embassy of India in Phnom Penh.”
This advisory from the Indian Embassy was issued amidst heightened tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border, with both nations' military forces claiming to have inflicted considerable damage on each other.
A Cambodian defense spokesperson announced on Saturday that at least 13 individuals have died and 71 others sustained injuries in clashes on Cambodian territory. Reports from Thai media indicated that the border disputes persisted for a third consecutive day following gunfire from the Cambodian side directed at Thai soldiers.
During a press briefing, Cambodian Defence Ministry's Undersecretary of State and spokesperson Maly Socheata stated, “Five Cambodian soldiers were killed and 21 others injured.” She added, “Additionally, eight civilians lost their lives and 50 sustained injuries in Oddar Meanchey province.”
The Cambodian Ministry of National Defence reported that the Thai military broadened its operations into another Cambodian province, Pursat, on Saturday.
In retaliation against Cambodia's renewed assault, the Thai Navy initiated the 'Trat Strike 1' operation and “successfully repelled” the Cambodian incursion at three critical locations, according to a statement from the Thai Ministry of Defence spokesperson’s office.
Moreover, the Thai Navy deployed a task force of four vessels to assist the operation in Trat and provide fire support to ground forces, as reported by the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand on Saturday.
