New Delhi, Jan 15 (NationPress) India expressed its heartfelt condolences to the Thai populace and government following the tragic loss of life and injuries caused by a train accident in the northeastern region of the country on Wednesday.
Local authorities reported that the death toll from a crane collapse, which derailed a passenger train in Nakhon Ratchasima province, has tragically climbed to 32, with nearly 70 individuals injured.
"We are profoundly saddened by the devastating loss of lives and injuries in the train accident in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on January 14, 2026. Our deepest sympathies go out to the people and the Government of Thailand during this sorrowful time. We convey our sincere condolences to the affected families and wish for a speedy recovery for all the injured," stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on X.
The disaster occurred on Wednesday morning when a construction crane, utilized for a high-speed rail bridge, collapsed onto the train traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province.
During a press briefing, Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Chaiwat Chuenkosum indicated that the State Railway of Thailand anticipates it will take about seven days to clear the wreckage and restore normal track operations while a thorough investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn previously informed reporters that he has mandated agencies to conduct a transparent and comprehensive investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
As per reports from Thai media, the principal contractor for the railway section involved is Italian-Thai Development PLC, which has publicly stated its commitment to fully assume responsibility for compensation and medical treatment.
