Bhubaneswar, March 30 (NationPress) Tragically, one individual lost their life, while eight others sustained injuries when 11 coaches of the Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Express derailed in the vicinity of the Cuttack-Nergundi Railway Section, part of the Khurda Road Division under the East Coast Railway on Sunday.
The victim has been identified as Suvankar Roy, aged 22, hailing from Netaji Road-Madhyapara in Alipurduar, West Bengal.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:54 a.m. on that Sunday.
District Magistrate Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde confirmed that an inquiry into the situation has commenced.
"One person has died due to the incident... Eight individuals required referral and have been transported... An investigation is underway," he informed the media.
Upon being alerted about the derailment, officials from East Coast Railway (ECoR), the Cuttack District collector, fire service teams, and local law enforcement quickly arrived at the scene to undertake rescue and recovery efforts.
Discussing the unfortunate event, Chief Public Relations Officer of ECoR, Ashok Kumar Mishra, stated, "Today, around 11:54 a.m., we received reports confirming the derailment of the Kamakhya-bound Bangalore-Kamakhya (12551) superfast AC Express in the Nirgundi-Kandarpur area of Cuttack. Following protocols, Accident Relief Trains (ARTs) and Accident Relief Medical Vans (ARMVs) from the Khurda Road division were dispatched to the location immediately."
Mr. Mishra also mentioned that both central and state government emergency response agencies were alerted without delay.
"Our primary concern at this moment is to facilitate the transport of passengers stranded at the site to their intended railway stations. An emergency control room has been established to assist them in reaching their destinations promptly," he added.
He further stated that sufficient personnel have been deployed to restore normalcy on the route as quickly as possible.
A special train is being organized to transport the stranded passengers of the affected train to their respective destinations.
However, the reasons behind the derailment will be determined only after an initial assessment of the incident.
In the aftermath of the derailment, several trains, including the 12822 Dhauli Express (BRAG), 12875 Neelachal Express (BBS), and 22606 Purulia SF Express (RTN), have been redirected.
