Bhubaneswar, March 30 (NationPress) The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) is set to initiate an investigation to ascertain the reasons behind the derailment of the 12551 Bangalore-Kamakhya AC SF Express near Nergundi Station in Cuttack on Sunday.

Tragically, one passenger lost their life while eight others suffered injuries in this unfortunate incident, which took place at approximately 11:54 am.

“In a heartbreaking event today, the Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derailed close to Nergundi Station, leading to the untimely death of one passenger and injuring eight more. Rescue operations were promptly initiated by local authorities,” stated the ECoR.

The deceased has been identified as Suvankar Roy (22), hailing from West Bengal. Additionally, a female passenger incurred serious injuries, while others received treatment for minor wounds.

The Indian Railway authorities have declared an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.

Moreover, the Railways will allocate Rs 2.5 lakh for the medical treatment of the seriously injured female passenger.

Passengers with minor injuries will also receive Rs 50,000 from the Railways.

“Immediate medical assistance has been extended to the injured passengers, along with the necessary compensation for the victims' families,” added the ECoR.

The Railways has conveyed their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased while wishing for the speedy recovery of the injured.

“Mail Express Trains are currently operating on the Howrah-Visakhapatnam UP Line. Down Line services have been redirected via Barang-Naraj-Kapilas Road instead of the standard Barang-Cuttack-Nergundi route,” reported the ECoR.

Importantly, 11 coaches of the Bangalore-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derailed near Nergundi Station in the Cuttack-Nergundi Railway Section of the Khurda Road Division of East Coast Railway on Sunday.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, local administration, ECoR officials, fire services personnel, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), and National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) swiftly arrived at the scene to commence rescue operations.

The stranded passengers received essential services such as drinking water, food, and medical care from the local administration and the Railways.

Subsequently, the passengers were transported to their destinations via a special train organized by the ECoR.
