Bhubaneswar, May 4 (NationPress) The state's Works Department has established a high-level technical committee to investigate the tragic incident that occurred during the construction of a bridge over the Kathajodi River at Khannagar, according to an official announcement made on Sunday.
The accident claimed the lives of three workers, while two others suffered serious injuries.
This technical committee has been tasked with delivering a comprehensive report that identifies those accountable for this unfortunate incident.
An official notice released by the Odisha Works Department stated: “A high-level Technical Committee is hereby formed with the following members to investigate the reasons behind the fatal mishap that transpired on 03.05.2025 during the execution of the project aimed at enhancing the Cuttack ring road to a 6-Lane Standard from 19/600 Km to 21/700 km (from Khannagar to Link Road), which includes a 993-meter 3-lane elevated corridor under the State Plan. The Technical Committee is expected to present a detailed report along with the names of the individuals or entities responsible for such lapses to this Department within 15 days.”
The committee, led by the EIC-cum-Special Secretary to the Government, also includes the Chairman of the Works Department, the Chief Engineer of Roads-II in Odisha, and the Additional District Magistrate (General) of Cuttack district.
Earlier, while addressing the media, the Works Department minister, Prithiviraj Harichandan, labeled the event as tragic and acknowledged that errors made by the agencies involved or the technical staff present at the site contributed to the fatal accident.
Reports indicate that three individuals, including an engineer, lost their lives when a pre-fabricated concrete slab, being hoisted by a crane for the under-construction bridge, collapsed and crushed five people, including the deceased, on Saturday evening.
Two individuals who were severely injured are currently receiving treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. In response to the incident, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased.
