Bhubaneswar, April 24 (NationPress) In a heart-wrenching event, two minors tragically drowned in the Mahanadi River close to Jobra Anicut in Cuttack on Thursday.

The victims have been identified as Soumya Ranjan Behera (14) and Srishanta Jena (17), both residents of Naikula Sai in the Jobra locality of Cuttack.

A senior police representative informed IANS that a group of six minors, including the victims, had gathered to bathe in the Mahanadi River that day.

Fortunately, four of them managed to escape the water, while the two deceased became trapped in quicksand and were unable to emerge.

Upon receiving notification, police and fire service teams arrived on the scene to conduct rescue efforts. After over an hour of searching, the fire service personnel retrieved the two from the river.

They were subsequently transported to SCB Medical College and Hospital, where medical staff pronounced them dead upon arrival.

Local residents expressed concerns, stating that several individuals have drowned at this location, yet the authorities have not implemented any substantial safety measures.

In a separate unfortunate occurrence, two minor sisters drowned in a pond within the jurisdiction of the Kasia Marine Police Station in Bhadrak district on Thursday.

The victims were identified as Krishna Rani (7) and Koel Malik (5), both from the Basudevpur region in Bhadrak district.

Reports indicate that the sisters had gone to the village pond with their grandmother for a bath that morning. After bathing, their grandmother left, believing the girls would follow.

When the sisters did not return for a prolonged period, family members began to search for them, discovering them floating in the pond, unconscious.

The family rushed them to a nearby hospital, where the doctors confirmed their deaths.
