Patna, July 11 (NationPress) A devastating event unfolded in Ratnamala village, located in the Bagaha subdivision of West Champaran district, on Friday. Tragically, two of the five children who ventured into the Gandak River for a bath drowned, casting a shadow of grief over the community.
As per eyewitness accounts, the five children sought relief from the sweltering heat by entering the Gandak River, but were quickly swept away by the strong currents into deeper waters.
While three children successfully returned to safety, two were tragically lost.
Upon learning of the incident, local residents and divers promptly initiated a rescue effort, and after significant struggle, the bodies of the two children were recovered from the river.
Dr. S.P. Agarwal, the Medical Officer at Bagaha Sub-Divisional Hospital, confirmed the unfortunate demise of both children.
The atmosphere in Ratnamala village is now filled with sorrow, as family members of the deceased are inconsolable, and the entire community mourns.
The local administration has urged residents to remain vigilant while bathing in rivers, particularly during the monsoon season when water conditions can become hazardous.
“We are in the process of completing further legal formalities and will provide necessary assistance to the families affected,” stated a police official from the Bagaha subdivision.
This incident serves as a critical reminder of the risks associated with river bathing in the monsoon season, when water levels and currents can change abruptly, posing severe threats to safety.
In a similar incident earlier this year, on June 11, four children drowned while bathing in the Gandak River near Semwari Thokar, under the jurisdiction of the Dhanaha police station in Bagaha.
Local sources indicated that approximately 15–20 children from Khalwa Patti village, adjacent to Tamkuha Bazaar, went to the river to cool off from the oppressive heat.
During this outing, six children ventured into deep waters and began to struggle. Although they called for help, by the time assistance arrived, four children had already succumbed to the treacherous currents.
