Bhubaneswar, April 22 (NationPress) Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi declared an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the families of two police officers who tragically lost their lives in a road mishap in Cuttack.

The Chief Minister's office reported that CM Majhi conveyed profound sorrow regarding the demise of the two police personnel involved in the accident that occurred at Gatiroutpatna on the Cuttack-Paradip Road within the jurisdiction of CRRI police station on Tuesday.

In a statement on X, CM Majhi expressed heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, instructing that a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each be given to the next of kin of the deceased. He also hoped for a swift recovery for the injured.

The victims were identified as home guard Jagannath Mahali, who was operating the Police Control Room (PCR) van, and Lokanath Shabar, a member of the Odisha Auxiliary Police Force (OAPF).

A sand-laden vehicle collided with the PCR van from the opposite direction at around 4:30 a.m. at Gatiroutpatna.

The impact was so intense that the PCR van was utterly wrecked. The police personnel inside the van were trapped in the damaged vehicle.

Emergency services were alerted and arrived promptly to rescue the critically injured constable.

He was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment. Fire services later retrieved the bodies of the driver and another constable, which were subsequently handed over to the police staff.

According to DCP Cuttack, Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, “One of our PCRs linked to the CRRI police station was patrolling the area when it collided with a Hyva truck. Tragically, both vehicles overturned, resulting in the immediate deaths of two police personnel. One officer who was injured is currently receiving care at the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The truck driver has been detained, and an investigation is underway.”
