Bhubaneswar, Jan 26 (NationPress) Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakhs for the family of the Class 10 student who tragically passed away in a road accident. This incident occurred when a pick-up van carrying approximately 25 school students to a Republic Day parade in the vicinity of Malbiharpur village, located in the Banki area of Cuttack district, met with a mishap.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office via their X handle, he conveyed profound sorrow regarding the incident and revealed that the deceased student's family would receive Rs 3 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund along with an additional Rs 2 lakh from the state School and Mass Education department. Furthermore, the department will extend financial assistance of Rs 30,000 to each of the injured students.

The Chief Minister instructed the medical authorities and district administration to ensure proper medical care for the injured students involved in this unfortunate event.

In the meantime, the Secretary of the S&ME Department, Shalini Pandit, visited the injured students at Banki, at SCB MCH on Sunday.

The health status of the injured students is reported to be stable. Official sources indicate that she has also mandated a Collector-level investigation into the incident. Additionally, the headmaster of the relevant High School has been suspended.

The S&ME Department has directed all schools within the state to implement measures to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.

According to Cuttack SP Prateek Singh, "We received reports that students from Malbiharpur Government School in Banki were being transported to the parade ground at the nearby Saranda village. The vehicle lost control at a turn and overturned. The injured students were quickly taken to the nearby Athagarh Hospital, while some were later transferred to Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital for more advanced care. Unfortunately, one student died from injuries while receiving treatment at Athagarh Hospital. Stringent actions will be taken against those found responsible for this incident."
