Chennai, July 8 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, expressed his heartfelt condolences and declared financial support for families impacted by the devastating train-van accident that claimed the lives of two schoolchildren and left several others injured near Semmanguppam in Cuddalore district.
The tragic event occurred around 7:45 a.m. at a railway crossing when a school van, transporting children, attempted to cross the tracks despite the approach of a passenger train heading towards Chidambaram.
The train struck the van, dragging it approximately 50 meters, which resulted in the fatalities of 12-year-old Selvan Nimilesh and 16-year-old Selvi Charumathi.
Multiple individuals, including the van driver, sustained serious injuries and were promptly taken to Cuddalore Government Hospital.
In a statement released from the Secretariat, CM Stalin remarked, “Hearing about the tragic loss of these two young lives has left me in shock and sorrow. The untimely deaths of these children at such a young age fill me with profound sadness.”
He also declared a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each from the Chief Minister's General Relief Fund for the families of the deceased children.
Furthermore, Rs 1 lakh will be allocated to those who were severely injured, while Rs 50,000 will go to those with minor injuries. He instructed hospital officials to provide excellent medical care to all injured parties.
In the meantime, officials from Southern Railway have acted swiftly, suspending gatekeeper Pankaj Sharma, who was on duty during the incident, due to alleged negligence. Initial investigations indicate that the railway gate might have been left open or unsecured, facilitating an unsafe crossing for the van.
A high-level committee has been established to examine the incident, focusing on reviewing CCTV footage, collecting eyewitness accounts, and analyzing communication logs.
Officials have assured that strict actions will be taken based on the committee's recommendations and emphasized the need to enhance safety measures at railway crossings throughout Tamil Nadu.
This incident has sparked outrage among the residents of Semmanguppam, with grieving parents and community members calling for more stringent safety regulations.
“Our children’s lives should not be sacrificed due to negligence and outdated infrastructure,” expressed Manisamy, a local resident.
As families grieve, the state has committed to accountability and reform following a tragedy that many feel could have been avoided.
