Chennai, Aug 6 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin declared a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family of Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) Shanmughavel, who tragically lost his life while on duty in Tiruppur district.
The shocking event unfolded at a private estate owned by AIADMK MLA Mahendran in Madathukulam.
Shanmughavel, a resident of Thalavai Pattinam near Dharapuram, was assigned to the Kudimangalam Police Station close to Udumalpet.
Police reports indicate that the officer responded to a disturbance on Tuesday night involving a father-son duo, Moorthy and Manikandan, who were employed as laborers at the MLA's estate.
Under the influence of alcohol, the two men allegedly became aggressive during the inquiry and attacked the officer with sickles.
Shanmughavel suffered severe injuries and succumbed at the scene. Following the attack, the assailants fled.
Local residents alerted the police upon hearing the disturbance. A team quickly arrived, retrieved the officer's body, and transported it to a government hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The Tamil Nadu Police Department has established five special teams to locate and apprehend the fugitives, who are still at large.
A large-scale manhunt is in progress, with officers searching nearby villages and potential hideouts. Both suspects are known for their history of unruly conduct and are believed to be repeat offenders.
The murder of a police officer on duty has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across the state, especially since it occurred within the premises of a sitting legislator.
Senior police officials have visited the scene and mandated a comprehensive investigation.
Expressing deep condolences, Chief Minister Stalin stated, "This is an irreparable loss. The state stands united with the family of the courageous officer who fell in the line of duty," while announcing the Rs 1 crore ex gratia.
The state government and police have pledged that those responsible will face justice promptly.
