New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar stated on Monday that India holds Thailand in high regard as a long-time friend and a significant maritime neighbor. He emphasized that India's Act East policy aligns well with Thailand's Look West policy.
During a meeting with Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow in New Delhi, EAM Jaishankar reflected on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangkok for the BIMSTEC Summit in April and highlighted that multiple agreements were signed during that event.
"India and Thailand have a long history of close and cordial relations. We consider Thailand a valued friend and an important maritime partner. Our Act East policy resonates with Thailand’s Look West policy. Our relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bangkok in April 2025 for the BIMSTEC Summit," he noted in his opening remarks.
"At that time, we signed several agreements spanning handlooms, handicrafts, digital technologies, MSMEs, and maritime heritage. In light of the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape affecting both nations, we believe that a regular exchange of views on critical issues is essential. I am particularly eager for an in-depth discussion regarding the situation in Myanmar during your visit," he added.
Earlier, EAM Jaishankar warmly welcomed Sihasak Phuangketkeow and the accompanying delegation to India. He reminisced about meeting Phuangketkeow at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur and expressed condolences on the passing of Thailand's Queen Mother, Queen Sirikit.
Sihasak Phuangketkeow arrived in India on Sunday for an official visit. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) conveyed, "We extend a warm welcome to FM Sihasak Phuangketkeow on his inaugural official visit to India as the Foreign Minister of Thailand. This is a timely opportunity to strengthen our strategic partnership and enduring civilizational ties with Thailand."
