Bhopal, Dec 1 (NationPress) The Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Department issued a show cause notice to Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University in Sehore district following an outbreak of violence by students late on November 25.
The notice, penned by Additional Secretary of the Higher Education Department, Veteran Singh Bhalavi, demands a response from the VIT administration regarding several matters, including the total number of students who fell ill on campus.
Within the notice, the administration is accused of practicing a dictatorial approach and intimidating students with severe repercussions if they voice their complaints.
It was also reported that 35 students (23 males and 12 females) suffered from jaundice and required treatment between November 1 and November 24.
“The VIT administration is operating the institute like a fortress, where students are barred from expressing concerns about irregularities. An instance of this dictatorship was witnessed when Sehore's Chief Medical and Health Officer (CHMO) was denied entry to the campus for over two hours,” the notice stated.
The state government's Higher Education Department has instructed VIT University to provide a comprehensive reply within seven days.
This action follows directives from Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who ordered Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar to hold a high-level review meeting concerning private universities and educational institutions statewide, aiming to implement necessary corrective actions.
The Chief Minister also dispatched in-charge Minister for Sehore district, Krishna Gaur, to promptly visit the university, engage with students, and discuss issues with the VIT management.
Gaur visited the VIT campus and communicated with students and management last Thursday.
On November 25, over 3,000 students protested vigorously after numerous peers reportedly fell ill with jaundice, allegedly due to substandard food and water.
The protests escalated into violence as students set fire to an ambulance, a bus, and at least three cars, while also vandalizing hostels, the Chancellor's residence, and other campus facilities.
The situation was stabilized after senior police and district officials arrived at the campus and engaged with the protesting students.
The unrest was triggered when security personnel allegedly assaulted students who had been complaining for over a month about contaminated food and water without any action from the administration.
Police have filed an FIR against warden Prashant Kumar Pandey and five other staff members under Sections 190(2), 296A, 115(2), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, based on a student's complaint.
