New York, Oct 21 (NationPress) Nirav Shah, a former federal health official in the United States, has declared his candidacy for the Governor of Maine, entering the race for the Democratic Party nomination.
"We are at a pivotal moment and require a governor with demonstrated leadership skills, prepared to face our challenges from day one," Shah shared on X this past Monday.
"My campaign focuses on addressing issues such as feeding children, resolving housing problems, ensuring healthcare funding, and driving economic growth," he emphasized.
Shah aims to take over from Democrat Governor Janet Mills, who is stepping down after two terms to run against Republican Senator Susan Collins in the upcoming election.
If successful, Shah would become the third Indian American to hold a state governorship, following in the footsteps of Bobby Jindal in Louisiana and Nikki Haley in South Carolina.
While Jindal and Haley represented the Republican Party, Shah is running as a Democrat.
A trained doctor and lawyer, Shah served as the principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) during the administration of former President Joe Biden.
Prior to that, he led the State CDC and was the director of the Illinois State Department of Public Health.
Shah will be up against at least four other candidates vying for the Democratic nomination in a state that supported the party in the 2024 presidential election.
On the Republican front, Jonathan Bush, the nephew of former President George H.W. Bush, is also in the race for the party's nomination.
Shah commenced his campaign with events in Portland, the state's largest city, and in Brunswick.
Following these events, he remarked, "I’m thrilled by the overwhelming support I’ve encountered throughout the state today."
Shah was a prominent figure in Maine during the COVID pandemic, leading the state's health response as the director of the Maine CDC.
"As Maine CDC Director, I witnessed how we could navigate through extremely challenging times by leaning on empathy and resilience," he stated.
"I will carry these same principles into the governor's office to address significant issues: the unsustainable rise in living and housing costs, an economy that isn’t serving the populace, and a rural healthcare system that is likely to deteriorate further due to (President Donald Trump)," the committed Democrat articulated.
