San Francisco, Feb 28 (NationPress) The Consulate General of India in San Francisco has expressed its heartfelt condolences and support to the family of Nilam Shinde, a 35-year-old Indian national, who is currently in a coma due to a serious road incident that occurred in California on February 14.
In a statement shared on social media, the consulate remarked on Friday: "We express our heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to the family of Nilam Shinde, who is a victim of a grave road accident in California on February 14, and is now receiving care at UC Davis Health hospital near Sacramento. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco has maintained ongoing communication with the hospital, family, and friends in recent days and has been providing all possible assistance. We will remain engaged to support her and her family."
Shinde, a resident of Satara district in Maharashtra, sustained critical injuries to her head, hands, and chest after being hit by a vehicle in California.
The driver involved in the accident has been apprehended.
She was admitted to the ICU of a local hospital and has been in a coma since then.
Her father, Tanaji Shinde, is striving to obtain a visa to be by her side but has encountered delays.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has intervened on behalf of the family with US authorities, resulting in an emergency visa interview set for Friday at the US consulate in Mumbai at 9 a.m.
According to sources, "The MEA has taken action regarding the matter with the US. The US side is currently reviewing the formalities for the expedited issuance of a visa for the applicant's family."
In the meantime, NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule has reached out to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other officials to accelerate the visa process.
In a post on X, she called on authorities for immediate assistance.
"Nilam Shinde, a student in the US, was injured in the accident and is undergoing treatment in a local hospital. Her father, Tanaji Shinde, urgently needs to travel to the US due to this medical emergency. He has applied for an urgent visa but requires assistance. The family is appealing for help from @DrSJaishankar Ji, @meaMADAD, and @IndianEmbassyUS to urgently address the matter and provide support," Sule stated.
Nilam's family has been actively seeking immediate travel clearance to be with her during this crucial period.
NCP's Supriya Sule brought attention to the case on Wednesday, urging the authorities to expedite the visa process.
"Student Nilam Shinde has been in an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local facility," she mentioned in a post on X.
"Her father, Tanaji Shinde, from Satara, Maharashtra, India, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical crisis. Tanaji Shinde has applied for an urgent visa to the USA and requires assistance," she added.
