New Delhi, Sep 6 (NationPress) With an increasing global focus on enhancing bilateral relations with India, former Indian Ambassador to Poland, Deepak Vohra, declared the present diplomatic environment a significant achievement for the nation. In response to US President Donald Trump’s comments about the “very special” relationship between India and the US, Vohra noted that India’s international standing has notably risen under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance.

In an exclusive discussion with IANS, Vohra, who boasts more than 50 years of diplomatic expertise, stated: “Since PM Modi assumed office, India's prominence on the global stage has only escalated. Such an occurrence is unprecedented in my experience.”

On Friday (US time), during a press briefing in Washington, President Trump lauded Prime Minister Modi, referring to him as “a remarkable Prime Minister” and a “friend,” while asserting that the relationship between their nations remains robust. However, he did express dissatisfaction regarding India's substantial oil purchases from Russia.

Here are some notable excerpts from the conversation with Deepak Vohra.

IANS: Do you believe the US is affected by India's strengthening ties with China and Russia?

Deepak Vohra: That’s an insightful question. Why wouldn’t the US be affected? India's bilateral associations with any nation are autonomous. Any country wishing to foster a positive relationship with India will be welcomed — and vice versa. Just look at the Maldives, whose President formerly opposed us but is now aligned. The same applies to Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

India’s diplomatic approach is quite sophisticated. We maintain favorable relations with both the US and Russia — a positive evolution. We are also striving to enhance our rapport with China. President Trump makes various statements at different times, but our responses are measured.

Trump posted his thoughts on social media, as did we on X. We seek a good relationship with the US. While we have not criticized you, you have criticized us multiple times. Yet, we’ve upheld our decorum — that illustrates maturity.

IANS: President Trump characterized India-US relations as a “very special relationship,” stating he and PM Modi will always remain friends. What is your perspective?

Deepak Vohra: When someone commends us, we extend our gratitude. We are courteous individuals. We are the descendants of Chanakya. I would urge Trump to explore ‘Chanakya Niti.’ It emphasizes that if relations with a country are poor, close the door — but never shut the window. That encapsulates India’s philosophy.

IANS: Do you see it as a diplomatic victory for India that the US, China, and Russia all desire to maintain strong ties?

Deepak Vohra: Absolutely, it is a diplomatic triumph. As I mentioned, I have been in diplomacy for over 52 years, and I can assert that since PM Modi took office, India's international reputation has surged immensely. I have never witnessed anything like this before.

Even US media outlets have critiqued Trump, claiming he has deteriorated relations with China, Russia, and India. Yet, when PM Modi addresses global platforms, the world pays attention. That signifies a lot.

IANS: Would you agree that PM Modi has evolved into a global brand?

Deepak Vohra: One hundred percent — ‘Brand Modi’. Whether one admires him or not, he is impossible to overlook. Narendra Modi represents 'Brand India'. If you travel internationally and inquire what people know about India, they will reference Yoga and PM Modi.

PM Modi resembles Jambavan from the Ramayana, who reminded Lord Hanuman of his potential. In a similar manner, Modi is awakening Indians to their genuine capabilities.

IANS: Do you think the US aims to sustain good relations with India?

Deepak Vohra: Absolutely. Who else will the US market its products to? If they manufacture over a million cars, where will they be sold if not in India? The US is no longer on favorable terms with China.

PM Modi has been astute — he embodies the essence of Gujarat. Consider the GST reforms. Now, Indian consumers can purchase goods at reduced prices. Our admiration for the US remains intact. We still aspire for a positive relationship.

I believe Trump has come to realize he may have overstepped. Nevertheless, we won't retaliate negatively. That’s not our approach.

IANS: What avenues exist for India and the US to fortify their relationship?

Deepak Vohra: Through mutual respect and dignity. Today, India has a robust foreign policy. If any nation wishes to cultivate good relations with us, we will respond in kind.
