Washington, Sep 9 (NationPress) The Indian Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, held a meeting on Monday with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker. Ambassador Kwatra shared a photo from their discussion on X, referring to it as a “productive discussion” with Hooker.
He remarked, “Echoed the sentiments of our leaders. Both parties continue to collaborate through our ongoing bilateral and Quad initiatives, as part of the forward-looking India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership”.
This meeting comes on the heels of friendly exchanges between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following a brief period of tension.
During a White House press briefing, President Trump remarked, “I’ll always be friends” with Prime Minister Modi, describing him as a “great Prime Minister.”
He further emphasized, “India and the United States have a special relationship. There’s nothing to worry about,” to which PM Modi responded on Saturday, expressing his appreciation for Trump’s sentiments.
In recent weeks, Ambassador Kwatra has engaged with numerous Congressional leaders from both parties to highlight the importance of India-US ties and outline future directions.
On September 3, Kwatra met with Rep. Gregory Meeks, the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
In a post on X, the House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats quoted Rep. Meeks as emphasizing “Congress’ support for the U.S.-India partnership,” which has strengthened over the past 25 years, particularly through the Quad.
Ambassador Kwatra also mentioned on X that he briefed Rep. Meeks on “recent developments in the bilateral relationship,” covering “trade, energy, Indo-Pacific, and broader issues of mutual interest.”
These discussions occur as India confronts President Trump’s stringent trade policies. On August 27, Trump imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian imports to the US, doubling the initial 25 percent levy due to India's ongoing purchase of discounted Russian oil amid the Ukraine crisis.
