United Nations, June 10 (NationPress) - The global organization is optimistic that India can leverage its influence to encourage the Myanmar military government, the National Unity Government, and various ethnic factions to reach a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict, as stated by a senior UN representative.
On Monday, the official remarked that “India is a nation of influence” in Myanmar, highlighting the “diabolical” situation in the country, which has been exacerbated by an earthquake amidst severe political unrest and insurgency challenges.
The official elaborated that the conflict is complex, involving not just one side and an opposition. It includes the Myanmar military, numerous ethnic armed groups, and organized opposition from the former NLD (National League for Democracy), whose civilian administration was ousted by the military junta.
According to the official, a peaceful Myanmar can only be achieved through dialogue among the conflicting parties, yet each faction currently favors a military approach.
There exists a “zero-sum mentality” among the conflicting sides, with each party believing a total military victory will favor them. The official pointed out that if they cannot win outright, they hope to gain more territory to strengthen their negotiating power.
“I hope India can be a part of the group of neighboring countries that can bring reason to this senseless conflict,” the official expressed.
The UN expressed disappointment over India's stringent policies regarding the Rohingya fleeing Myanmar and seeking refuge elsewhere.
However, the official added that the UN hopes to “continue to engage closely with India” to explore constructive actions regarding humanitarian support and the treatment of Rohingya.
