New Delhi, Jan 25 (NationPress) The Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received a grand ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday, hosted by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit represents a pivotal moment in India-Indonesia relations, as President Prabowo is set to be the Chief Guest at India's 76th Republic Day festivities on Sunday.
Arriving in New Delhi on Thursday evening, he was welcomed at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
After the ceremonial welcome, he conveyed his heartfelt thanks for the privilege.
"I want to extend my sincerest gratitude for the esteemed honour bestowed upon me today. Indonesia regards India as a very close ally. India was among the first to recognize our independence and lend support during our fight for freedom. We will always remember India's contributions to our cause," stated President Prabowo.
"I feel incredibly honoured today, especially as I prepare to be the chief guest at your Republic Day parade tomorrow," he continued, affirming, "I am dedicated to fostering closer cooperation and a stronger partnership with India. This is my commitment."
This visit marks President Prabowo's inaugural official trip to India since taking office in October 2024.
Later today, he will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat and hold discussions with PM Modi at Hyderabad House around noon. The agenda includes the signing of MOUs and press briefings.
Additionally, he will meet with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar at the Taj Mahal Hotel, followed by a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
On Friday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with President Prabowo, sharing the moment on X, stating, "Delighted to meet President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia at the beginning of his State Visit to India. I value his insights and positive sentiments for advancing our multifaceted bilateral ties."
In a statement prior to his state visit, President Prabowo acknowledged India's historical support during Indonesia's fight for independence, saying, "India is a critical friendly nation for Indonesia. Throughout our struggle for independence until 1949, India provided us with medical, financial, and other forms of assistance. For us, India remains a vital friend and partner."
Interestingly, Sukarno, Indonesia's first President, was the Chief Guest during India's first Republic Day celebrations in 1950. Continuing this legacy of friendship, Indonesia has dispatched a 352-member contingent from its National Armed Forces, which includes marching troops and a drum band, to take part in this year's celebrations.
