New Delhi, Jan 24 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during his visit to New Delhi on Friday, prior to the upcoming discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set for Saturday.
"I am delighted to meet President Prabowo Subianto from Indonesia at the beginning of his State Visit to India. I appreciate his insights and optimistic views regarding the enhancement of our diverse bilateral relations," the EAM shared on X following their meeting.
This marks Prabowo's inaugural visit to India as President of Indonesia, having taken office in October 2024, and he is also set to be the Chief Guest for India's 76th Republic Day festivities on Sunday.
"President Prabowo's role as Chief Guest during India's 76th Republic Day will be a significant tribute to our valued friendship," EAM Jaishankar stated.
The Indonesian leader arrived in New Delhi late on Thursday and was greeted at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
In his remarks prior to his departure, Prabowo emphasized that India is a "crucial friendly nation" for Indonesia, one that provided extensive support during Indonesia's fight for independence.
"We were still engaged in our independence struggle until '49, and India was providing medical support, financial aid, and further assistance. Therefore, India is a vital friend and ally for us," he remarked.
Interestingly, Sukarno, Indonesia's first President, was the chief guest at India's inaugural Republic Day celebrations in 1950.
This time, Indonesia is sending a 352-member contingent from the Indonesian National Armed Forces, which includes ceremonial troops and a drum ensemble.
President Soekarno noted that the Indonesian contingent is positioned third in the parade sequence, following the opening troops and veterans.
"If I am not mistaken, we have been honored with a place of distinction," he stated.
During his stay, Prabowo is set to engage in bilateral discussions with PM Modi at Hyderabad House on Saturday and will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He is also scheduled to meet with President Droupadi Murmu.
"The agreements and MoUs will encompass various domains such as health, cultural exchanges, security matters, maritime safety, and advancements in technology and digital development. I will also connect with industry leaders and entrepreneurs from India interested in investing in Indonesia," he elaborated.
Accompanying President Prabowo on this visit is Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
"India and Indonesia have maintained warm and amicable relations for millennia. As a Comprehensive Strategic Partner, Indonesia plays a pivotal role in India’s Act East Policy and our vision for the Indo-Pacific," stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a prior announcement this week.
From India, President Prabowo is expected to continue his journey to Malaysia for a State visit.
