Intense Fighting Erupts in Syria's Daraa Amid Uncertain Developments in Homs

Damascus, Dec 6 (NationPress) Intense fighting erupted on Friday in several regions of Syria's southern Daraa province as local factions captured numerous government-held sites. Concurrently, in central Homs province, the Syrian army maintained that its defenses are robust, countering opposition claims of troop withdrawals.
Pro-government Sham FM radio reported that fighting broke out in the eastern rural areas of Daraa and near the Nassib border crossing with Jordan; however, the militants did not manage to enter the facility itself.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, indicated that factions in western Daraa seized several government establishments in the city of Nawa, including local security offices. At least one civilian was reported dead, and government soldiers stationed at the targeted sites were allegedly captured.
In retaliation, government forces bombarded residential neighborhoods from their adjacent positions, causing panic among residents, as stated by the Observatory, further reported by Xinhua news agency.
In another area of Daraa, the Observatory noted that factions gained control over additional checkpoints, prompting army units to reposition themselves. There are also unverified reports suggesting that government forces have withdrawn some of their checkpoints in the area.
Meanwhile, in Homs province, Sham FM disclosed that fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have entered parts of the northern countryside, including the city of Al-Rastan and the town of Talbisa. No clashes were reported during these incursions.
Despite opposition assertions of army withdrawals from Homs, a statement from the Syrian military refuted such claims, affirming that troops remain deployed along solid defensive lines and have received reinforcements.
The recent developments in Daraa and Homs highlight a rapidly changing situation, with local factions and militant groups capitalizing on emerging vulnerabilities.
Just a day prior, HTS and allied militant groups had seized the city of Hama, Syria's fourth-largest city, following their captures of Aleppo and the entirety of Idlib provinces in northern Syria.
