Tehran, Feb 3 (NationPress) The spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated on Monday that the nation supports any government that has the backing of the Syrian people.
During a weekly press briefing, Baghaei commented on the commencement of Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa's official tour in the region and Iran's stance toward the new governance in the Arab nation.
Baghaei asserted, "This is our principled stance. Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has clearly stated that any government endorsed by the Syrian populace has our support."
He emphasized that all parties must play a role in ensuring security and stabilizing the circumstances in Syria, underscoring Iran's close observation of the evolving situation in the country.
Baghaei expressed optimism that the transitional phase in Syria would facilitate the establishment of an inclusive government representing all factions and segments within the Arab nation.
"We intend to leverage every opportunity to convey our position, including through the parties and nations that are active in Syria and with which we maintain strong relations," he remarked.
When asked whether Qatar and Iraq were mediating between Iran and Syria to assist in restoring relations, Baghaei replied that the re-establishment of ties is contingent upon various factors and requires specific prerequisites.
He added that it is not an "unconventional" matter for friendly nations to endeavor to foster positive interactions and exchange messages between Tehran and Damascus, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
A Syrian militant coalition led by al-Sharaa's Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group ousted former President Bashar al-Assad's government on December 8, 2024. The militant factions also penetrated Iran's embassy in Damascus. Iran has historically been a steadfast ally of al-Assad's administration in the region.
Al-Sharaa was designated as Syria's interim President during the transitional phase on January 29 and arrived in Saudi Arabia on Sunday for his inaugural foreign visit.
