Is Iran Prepared for Counter-Measures Against the IAEA's 'Anti-Iran' Resolution?

Tehran, June 9 (NationPress) The spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, announced on Monday that Iran has devised a comprehensive set of responses in anticipation of a potential anti-Iran resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors.

During a weekly press briefing in Tehran, Baghaei detailed Iran's expected reactions to the possible resolution that the United Nations nuclear regulator may adopt during its ongoing session in Vienna.

He stated, “There is no doubt that our response to confrontation will not involve further cooperation. The Islamic Republic of Iran has prepared a variety of strategies and measures, and the other parties are well aware of our capabilities in this regard,” Baghaei asserted.

He highlighted that Iran's strategy has consistently focused on engagement and collaboration with the IAEA, in line with the nation's responsibilities under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.

Baghaei pointed out that Iran has taken significant actions to foster cooperation with the IAEA, but due to the pressures and political influence from France, Britain, Germany, and the United States, the agency opted to compile a “comprehensive” report regarding Tehran's nuclear endeavors, which was subsequently misused by European nations to promote their own agendas.

He reiterated that Iran's nuclear initiatives are entirely peaceful, as reported by Xinhua. “Even considering the IAEA's recent report, it does not indicate any non-compliance or deviation from a peaceful path,” he stated, emphasizing that the report had been developed with political motives to cast doubt on Tehran's nuclear intentions.

If the resolution is passed, it could enable European nations to activate the snapback mechanism, a provision in the 2015 nuclear agreement that would permit the re-imposition of all international sanctions if Iran does not adhere to the deal.

Baghaei dismissed the European threats to invoke the snapback mechanism, asserting that due to the entirely “peaceful nature” of Iran's nuclear program, there is no justification for the issue to remain on the United Nations Security Council's agenda.

He added that the three European countries and the United States would bear responsibility for the repercussions of their confrontational actions.

In the IAEA's report, it was claimed that Iran had not provided sufficient explanations for uranium traces detected at three undeclared sites and accused the country of offering “less than satisfactory” cooperation.

In an interview with state-run IRIB TV, Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesperson for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, warned that the IAEA should not expect Iran to maintain its “broad and friendly” cooperation if the anti-Iran resolution is adopted, hinting at potential retaliatory actions from Iran.
