Iran's Leader Highlights Shared Concerns with Iraq Regarding Syrian Affairs

Tehran, Jan 8 (NationPress) Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Wednesday that both Iran and Iraq are aligned in their concerns regarding the ongoing situation in Syria.

These comments were made during a joint press conference alongside the visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, following their discussions earlier in the day in the Iranian capital, Tehran, as detailed in a statement from his office's website.

Pezeshkian highlighted the recent developments in the West Asia region, identifying several mutual concerns regarding Syria, including ensuring stability and calm, maintaining its territorial integrity, combating terrorist activities, expelling Israel from the occupied Syrian territories, and respecting religious sentiments, especially concerning the sacred sites and holy shrines of Shiite Muslims in Syria.

He also mentioned that discussions included the dangers posed by terrorism and the potential revival of terrorist cells in the region, which necessitated increased cooperation and vigilance between Iran and Iraq.

Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran has consistently sought peace, stability, and development for its neighbors, emphasizing the importance of Iraq's security and the welfare of its people.

In response, the Iraqi Prime Minister noted that his visit to Iran aimed to enhance bilateral cooperation and relations, stating, "We will work to strengthen collaboration between Iraq and Iran to ensure security and stability in both nations and foster prosperity in their relationship," as reported by the official news agency IRNA.

The Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported that Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq's commitment to establishing balanced relations with all international and regional actors for mutual benefit.

Regarding the situation in Syria, he emphasized that restoring calm was essential for regional stability, urging all parties to contribute to a comprehensive political resolution that would maintain Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity while halting foreign interference.

Al-Sudani expressed Iraq's readiness to collaborate with all factions in Syria for a peaceful government transition inclusive of all Syrian groups, as reported by Xinhua.

Leading a delegation, Al-Sudani arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for a one-day visit to discuss bilateral relations and regional and international matters of shared interest.
