West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya on Tuesday, 25 August circulated a strongly worded message across the party's organisational WhatsApp groups, warning leaders and workers at every level that proven charges of corruption or involvement in corrupt activities will attract strict disciplinary action. The message, written in Bengali in the form of a letter, reached groups spanning the state, district, regional, mandal and booth levels.

What Bhattacharya's Message Said

The letter opened by invoking the party's foundational values: 'Dear all BJP workers and activists at the state, district, regional, mandal and booth-levels, brothers and sisters. Always remember that honesty, transparency and ideology are the main driving forces of the BJP,' it read. Bhattacharya also cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'zero-tolerance policy' on corruption as the bedrock of the BJP's functioning ethos.

The message acknowledged that reports of 'undesirable activities and irregularities' at multiple levels had reached the state president's attention through letters and other communications. 'From the booth-level to the state level — this applies to any member: that if a person goes beyond the party's policy and gets involved in any immoral or corrupt act, the party will never take responsibility for that,' the letter stated.

Key Warning to All Levels

Bhattacharya made clear that the party leadership would act swiftly if even the 'slightest evidence' of corruption or wrongdoing surfaced against any functionary, regardless of their rank. The message urged workers to ensure that personal conduct did not damage the party's image or undermine the 'long-standing sacrifices' of its members.

'Be very careful that your actions for personal gain do not tarnish the party's image... Always remember that public service is our only goal,' the letter said, calling on all functionaries to maintain 'complete transparency' and the trust of ordinary citizens.

Context and Pattern

This is not the first time Bhattacharya has flagged concerns about corruption within the West Bengal BJP. However, according to reports, this marks the first occasion on which he has conveyed such a warning directly to workers at all organisational levels via a WhatsApp message — a notably wider reach than previous communications. Earlier, similar cautions had been issued by Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and state Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul.
