Israeli Prime Minister Indicates Advancements in Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations, Timeline Remains Uncertain

Jerusalem, Dec 24 (NationPress) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that progress has been achieved in the quest for a ceasefire-for-hostages arrangement with Hamas, but he emphasized that the timeline for an agreement remains ambiguous.
During a session of the Knesset on Monday, the Israeli parliament, Netanyahu remarked, “I do not know how long it will take,” while pledging to “continue to act in every possible way until we bring everyone home.”
Earlier that day, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar elaborated on aspects of the proposed deal in a private gathering of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, characterizing it as “a phased, gradual framework.”
According to reports from Israeli and Palestinian media, initiatives led by Qatari, Egyptian, and US mediators have indicated some progress, although a definitive breakthrough is still out of reach.
Israel's Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli informed Kan Reshet Bet public radio that there has been “some” advancement towards an agreement, noting that the parties are closer to a deal than they have been in months past. He mentioned that the initial phase would involve a “humanitarian phase,” which includes a 42-day ceasefire and the release of certain hostages.
“This ceasefire could last six months or 10 years, depending on the dynamics that develop on the ground,” Chikli stated.
The duration of the ceasefire has been a significant point of contention in prior negotiation efforts. Hamas aims to completely end the conflict, while Israel insists on dismantling Hamas' control over Gaza prior to any resolution and intends to maintain a military presence in the Palestinian territory even after the ceasefire.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the abduction of around 250 others. Currently, about 100 Israeli and foreign hostages are believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza, with Israeli estimates suggesting that dozens may already be deceased.
In retaliation, Israel has undertaken a comprehensive military operation, devastating large portions of the Gaza Strip. As per an update from the Gaza-based health authorities released on Monday, at least 45,317 individuals have died as a result of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.
