Jerusalem, April 18 (NationPress) The Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz expressed in a statement on Friday that he is dedicated, alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and all involved parties, to initiating a decisive strategy to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Katz highlighted that since assuming the role of defence minister in November last year, he made a commitment to two primary objectives: preventing Iran from developing nuclear arms and achieving victory in the multi-front conflict.
"The military is currently engaged in efforts to secure triumph across all fronts," he stated, emphasizing, "We will not permit threats of destruction against Israel to persist."
His statements mirrored a declaration from Netanyahu's office on Thursday, which affirmed that Israel would not permit Iran to gain access to nuclear arms, as reported by Xinhua news agency. This rhetoric from Israel comes just ahead of the second phase of nuclear discussions between the United States and Iran, set to take place this weekend in Rome, Italy.
The initial round of indirect negotiations occurred last week in Muscat, Oman, with both parties characterizing the talks as productive.
Oman's Foreign Ministry will continue to facilitate the upcoming discussions between US and Iranian officials scheduled for Saturday in Rome.
In their statement, the ministry mentioned that the Italian capital was selected as the new venue for the talks due to logistical considerations, expressing hope that the dialogues could progress further toward achieving a fair, binding, and sustainable agreement.
Oman also expressed gratitude to the Italian government for its collaboration and support in hosting the forthcoming meeting.
With Oman's mediation, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi participated in initial "indirect" dialogues with US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff in Muscat on April 12, concentrating on Iran's nuclear agenda and the possible lifting of US sanctions.
The discussions in Muscat, which both parties described as constructive, followed US President Donald Trump's announcement in early March indicating he had sent a letter to Iranian leaders, delivered via the United Arab Emirates, suggesting negotiations concerning Iran's nuclear program. Subsequently, Iran agreed to engage in indirect discussions.
