In a post on X, EAM Jaishankar remarked, "I congratulate my friend Motegi Toshimitsu on his appointment as Foreign Minister of Japan. I look forward to working together to advance our Special Strategic and Global Partnership."

Motegi previously held the role of Minister for Foreign Affairs from September 2019 until October 2021. His latest appointment follows Sanae Takaichi being elected as Japan's Prime Minister earlier the same day after a runoff election in Parliament, marking her as the first woman in this position.

In a message on X, PM Modi stated, "Heartiest congratulations, Sanae Takaichi, on your election as the Prime Minister of Japan. The Upper House confirmed Takaichi as Japan's next Prime Minister with a vote tally of 125, just surpassing the simple majority needed for victory. In the Lower House, she previously secured 237 votes, exceeding the required majority of 233.

A former television anchor, Takaichi ventured into Japanese politics in 1993, winning a Lower House seat as an independent. Now 64, she currently represents her home prefecture of Nara.

Takaichi joined Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party in 1996, serving in the Cabinet for the first time under former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, where she held the position of Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs. She later became the first female chair of the LDP's Policy Research Council.

From 2022 to 2024, Takaichi served as Japan’s Economic Security Minister and is known for being the longest-serving Minister for Internal Affairs across multiple tenures.

A prominent figure within the LDP’s conservative faction, Takaichi was elected as the leader of the LDP on Saturday, receiving 185 votes, defeating Shinjiro Shinjiro, who received 156 votes in a runoff after no candidate achieved a majority in the initial voting round.
