Seoul, Oct 6 (NationPress) North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has made a visit to the nation’s inaugural 5,000-ton destroyer, emphasizing the need to enhance the naval combat capabilities to "thoroughly" deter and respond to the provocations from the enemy, as reported by state media on Monday.
During his visit to the Choe Hyon destroyer on Sunday, accompanied by prominent party and government officials, Kim's itinerary included a military hardware exhibition, according to reports from Yonhap, citing the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
In April, North Korea introduced its new 5,000-ton multipurpose destroyer, named Choe Hyon, as part of its strategy to bolster its naval capabilities.
While touring the destroyer, Kim stated, "the tremendous ability of our navy should be exercised in the vast ocean to thoroughly deter or counter and punish the enemy's provocations" in order to safeguard the nation's sovereignty and security interests, as per the KCNA.
He highlighted that the Workers' Party would persist in its efforts without any pause to ensure the comprehensive and rapid growth of the naval combat force that defends the core of national rights.
Previously, North Korea announced that the Choe Hyon destroyer is armed with supersonic strategic cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, and various other offensive capabilities.
In June, the North launched another destroyer of the same classification, the Kang Kon, which was repaired after tipping over and sustaining damage during its maiden launch attempt in May.
North Korea is concentrating on fortifying its naval strength with plans to construct another 5,000-ton destroyer by October 2026.
Earlier on April 26, the nation unveiled its latest destroyer for the navy as part of a larger initiative to enhance maritime strength.
Pyongyang held a launching ceremony for its new 5,000-ton multipurpose destroyer at a shipyard located in the North's western port city of Nampho, as reported by the KCNA.
During the ceremony, Kim Jong-un was present alongside his daughter, known as Ju-ae, and also inspected the newly constructed naval warship named Choe Hyon in honor of a deceased North Korean anti-Japanese revolutionary.
