Tokyo, Sep 16 (NationPress) Shinjiro Koizumi, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in Japan, has declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to find a successor for the outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
During a press briefing that followed a cabinet session, Koizumi revealed that he had communicated his plans to his support group over the weekend.
He emphasized the significance of party unity, stating that tackling pressing concerns such as increasing prices is the party's top priority, according to a report by Xinhua news agency and national broadcaster NHK.
Additionally, he mentioned that Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato, who participated in the previous year's leadership contest, has agreed to take on the role of his campaign chief.
The contest to succeed Ishiba is anticipated to be competitive. Last week, former Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi announced his intention to run. Other probable contenders include Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi and Former Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi.
The LDP has opted for a comprehensive format for its upcoming leadership election, allowing votes from both lawmakers and regular party members, scheduled for October 4.
Earlier, on September 11, former Economic Security Minister Takayuki Kobayashi declared his candidacy for the LDP's presidential election next month, as reported by Xinhua and Kyodo News.
"I will take the lead and run in the LDP presidential election," Kobayashi, 50, stated on Thursday afternoon after meeting with his supporters in the parliament building.
Kobayashi, a former bureaucrat from the Finance Ministry, served as economic security minister under former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida from 2021 to 2022. He expressed confidence in having the backing of the requisite 20 LDP lawmakers for his candidacy.
This marks Kobayashi's second attempt at the presidency following an unsuccessful bid in the previous September's election, which Ishiba won to become Prime Minister the following month.
