Washington, April 4 (NationPress) Democrat Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi expressed on Thursday that the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on India are misguided and may lead to an unnecessary strain on the relationship between the US and the world’s largest democracy.
“The recent blanket tariffs from President Trump on India are not just misguided but also potentially harmful to the economic, diplomatic, and security interests of the United States. As our partnership with India becomes increasingly vital for our mutual prosperity and for addressing the military aggression and economic coercion from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), these tariffs unnecessarily jeopardize our relationship with India,” the Congressman stated.
The Congressman is among the five members of the House of Representatives of Indian descent, which includes Ro Khanna, Ami Bera, Shri Thanedar, and Pramila Jayapal.
He further added that while the bond between the US and India will remain strong, these new tariffs will lead to increased costs for American families and add pressure on both American and Indian businesses.
“I strongly urge President Trump to retract these damaging tariffs, including those on Indian imports, and to focus on the welfare of American families, the strength of the US-India relationship, and our combined economic and national security in the face of authoritarian challenges,” he commented.
On Wednesday, President Trump introduced a reciprocal tariff system aiming to impose higher tariffs on countries that impose high duties on imports from the US or maintain significant trade surpluses with the US.
A baseline tariff rate of 10 percent has been established for all imports into the US, while a number of countries have been assigned specific rates. Indian imports will face a tariff of 26 percent, Chinese imports will be taxed at 34 percent, and imports from the EU will have a rate of 20 percent, among others.
