Are Trump’s Policies Straining India-US Relations?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Dec 25, (NationPress) Prominent American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has indicated that the relationship between India and the United States is facing challenges, attributing the strain to the policies enacted by President Donald Trump which have undermined economic and security collaboration between the two nations.
“The current state of US-India relations is concerning for several reasons,” Krishnamoorthi remarked, highlighting trade conflicts as a significant contributor.
“These issues encompass our trading dynamics, among others,” he mentioned during an interview with IANS.
He noted that the decline in relations occurs at a crucial time when closer coordination is essential, especially in South Asia.
“We must unite to ensure the safety of the region,” he asserted.
Krishnamoorthi cautioned that inadequate collaboration may empower armed factions to take advantage of the existing instability.
“We must prevent armed groups from gaining traction and committing acts of violence,” he emphasized.
When asked what led to the shift away from decades of bipartisan support for robust India-US ties, he was straightforward. “Two words: Donald Trump,” he replied.
“Since Trump's arrival in office, the dynamics of US-India relations have changed drastically,” he continued, asserting that both economic and security partnerships have declined.
He expressed strong disapproval of Trump's interactions with Pakistan’s military leaders. “It is shocking how Trump has favored the military in Pakistan, disregarding the civilian government,” he stated.
“He invited the military chief for lunch at the White House, leaving out the civilian leaders,” Krishnamoorthi added.
“This behavior illustrates the poorly crafted nature of our foreign policy,” he criticized, accusing the administration of moving closer to adversaries while alienating allies, including India.
“When you distance friends and allies like India, while embracing adversaries such as China or Russia, it signifies weakness,” he remarked.
“Such weakness invites aggression,” Krishnamoorthi warned. “Aggression leads to conflict and possibly war.”
When asked if he saw any possibility for improvement, Krishnamoorthi expressed cautious optimism but highlighted ongoing policy challenges. “As long as Donald Trump maintains arbitrary tariffs on Indian goods and targets Indian nationals, he is making a significant strategic mistake,” he noted.
“This approach harms America, undermines our economy, and diminishes our global leadership,” he added, emphasizing that “the only ones celebrating this strategy are in Beijing and Moscow.”
India and the United States have enhanced their defense, technology, and economic collaboration over the last twenty years.
Experts caution that trade tensions and immigration policies could jeopardize trust at a time when both nations confront mutual strategic challenges.
